Well, howdy there! Let’s chew the fat about this here “22 40 time”, what they call it, “mill-i-tary time”, or some such thing. Don’t know why them army folks gotta make things so complicated, but I reckon we can figure it out together, y’all.
Now, you see a clock, right? Most times, it goes from 1 to 12, then starts all over again. That’s the regular time, the kind we use when we’re plannin’ supper or watchin’ the evenin’ news. But the military, they got their own way of doin’ things. They like to keep countin’ all the way up to 24.
So, when you see “22 40”, that’s just their way of sayin’ what time it is after lunchtime. See, once it hits 1 o’clock in the afternoon, they start addin’ on to 12. So, 1 p.m. is 1300, 2 p.m. is 1400, and so on. Keep on countin’ like that, and you’ll get to “22 40”.
What does 22 40 mean then? Well, it’s like this: 22 is bigger than 12, right? So, you just gotta take away 12 from it. 22 minus 12 is 10. That means it’s 10 somethin’. And that “40” part? That’s just the minutes, same as always. So, “22 40” is the same as 10:40 at night. Simple as pie, ain’t it?
Why they gotta do it this way? I ain’t got the foggiest. Maybe it’s so they don’t get mixed up about whether it’s mornin’ or night, I guess. ‘Cause if someone says “10 o’clock”, you might not know if they mean in the mornin’ or at night. But if they say “22 40”, you know for sure it’s late in the evenin’. That’s what I reckon, anyway.

- 5:00 PM is 17:00
- 6:00 PM is 18:00
- 7:00 PM is 19:00
- 8:00 PM is 20:00

- 10:00 PM is 22:00
- 11:00 PM is 23:00
- 12:00 AM is 00:00 or 24:00
Some folks, they call it “24-hour clock”. Sounds fancy, but it ain’t nothin’ more than countin’ all the hours in a day. We got 24 hours in a day, sunshine to sunshine, and this here military time just lays it all out for you, from zero dark thirty all the way to midnight.
Now, if you ever gotta write this “22 40” time, some folks like to say “two-two-four-zero hours”. I guess that’s how they do it in the army, real proper-like. Me, I’d just say “ten forty at night,” but to each their own, I say.
And if you gotta switch from regular time to this military time, it’s easy enough. Just remember, if it’s after lunch, add 12 to the hour. If it’s before lunch, just write it down as it is, but put a zero in front if it’s a single digit hour. Like, 7:00 AM is 0700.
So, there you have it. “22 40 time” ain’t so scary after all. Just a different way of tellin’ time, like speakin’ with a bit of a drawl, I suppose. It takes a little gettin’ used to, but once you get the hang of it, it’s as easy as rollin’ off a log. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I gotta go check on my biscuits. Don’t want ’em burnin’ now, do we?
Remember, anytime after 1 p.m. you just add 12 to it and you’ve got your military time. No need for fancy figuring or head scratching. Easy peasy.
Converting 22:40 to standard time is simple, just subtract 12 from the hours if it’s more than 12. That leaves you with 10, and the minutes stay the same, so it’s 10:40 p.m. Now you’re a pro!
